Dear Clients,

This is the May 2012 Massage and Herbal medicine news. In this edition I discuss:

  • the use of Echinacea for long distance travel,
  • isometrics - a wonderful type of remedial massage I am using
  • The treatment of stress, anxiety and depression

All interesting information.

COLDS, FLU AND BRONCHITIS

Welcome to the cooler months. The season for respiratory infections! It is also the season for long distance travel. Most of you have heard of Echinaceae, a herb used to fight respiratory infections. Well, recent research has shown that taking Echinaceae once a cold has started only gives you minimum protection. And taking it before a cold is likely to occur, during stressful periods like exams, work and relationship issues, or before or during long distance travel as a preventative, reduces the likelihood of getting an infection. In a trial involving long distance travellers, those that took 2 tablets a day prior to travel and 4 per day during travel protected themselves from subsequent infections. I have always used Echinaceae from April to October. And Echinaceae root is better than flowering tops. Once a cold has begun, olive leaf, Andrographis and other herbs are more effective, plus loads of Vitamin C ,A and zinc. So if you want me to make up a liquid mix for colds, or as a preventative such as Echinaceae in liquid or tablet form give me a call.

ISOMETRICS

Isometrics is a different form of remedial massage. It is a very effective method of you resisting the gentle pressure I apply on a limb or joint. This helps to release restrictions around a joint such as frozen shoulder, tight neck, stiff lower back or feet. It is very ettective in the following situations.

  • Restricted joint movements
  • Muscles that are too weak or tense
  • For anyone who finds it hard to .let go
  • For anyone who has had a stroke or neurological impairment

STRESS, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

The incidence of anxiety and depressionis increasing dramatically. In Australia and New Zealand about 20% of adults will experience mental health illness at some stage in their lives. The WHO acknowledges that depression is already a leading cause of disability and predicts that by 2020 depression will bev the second leading global disease after heart disease!

I am implementing a new 'Stress less programme' using herbs, diet and lifestyle to manage stress, anxiety and depression. In the consultation you discuss your situation, do a stress questionaire and as a result of this information I taylor make a 'Stress Less Programme' for you.

Examples of symptoms of stress that can be supported include:

  1. Insomnia, anxiety,worry,tendency to panic
  2. Wired and tired, irritation and frustration, muscular aches and pains
  3. Flat battery, lack of stamina
  4. Teary, overwhelm, difficulty making decisions, digestive upsets

And how we respond to what life thows at us depends on our previous conditioning. If you want any help give me a call.
