about me
Penny has been practising massage since 1987 and Herbal Medicine since 1996. She has also taught massage since 1989.
Penny's commitment to you is to make a difference to your health and wellbeing.

In this issue I talk about two issues. * The benefits of massage as a result of medical research findings. You may be surprised on some of the conditions massage can treat effectively. * Natural management of chronic inflammatory conditions. This includes auto-immune diseases as well as osteoarthritis.

The Benefits of Massage and Research Findings establishing this

* Musculo-skeletal pain - Lower back - massage provided short term improvement of sub-acute and chronic lower back pain( lasting longer than 3 months) and also decreased disability immediately post treatment. Therapeutic exercises and education were also part of the regime. - Neck and shoulder pain - massage provided short term relief of mechanical neck pain and immediate relief of neck and shoulder pain. Moderate evidence of reducing pain compared to no treatment at all. - Pain - Massage therapy effectively treated pain in headache, musculoskeletal, visceral, chronic, fibromyalgia, spinal cord and venous insufficiency compared to no treatment, sham treatment and other modalities. *Athletes, sports and exercise - Massage therapy is effective in reducing delayed onset muscle soreness and enhancing recovery after strenuous exercise. *Arthritis - Osteoarthritis of the knee - Significant improvement using massage. Effective for treating rheumatoid as well as osteoarthritis. - Twice weekly massage of the quadriceps muscle improved pain and stiffness, physical function and knee range of motion in adults diagnosed with osteoarthritis. * Mood - Anxiety and depression were identified as massage's greatest benefit. Studies show that massage increases the neurotransmitter oxytocin which is responsible for decreasing stress and anxiety and may be one of the mechanisms by which massage works. * Pre and post operative - Post operative cardiac surgery patients in intensive care had a reduction in pain and anxiety and improved their post-operative outcomes. * Headaches and Migraines - Massage therapy, physiotherapy, relaxation and chiropractic spinal manipulation may be as effective as drugs in the management of migraines. Massage was effective for headaches. * Hypertension - Massage has a moderating effect on blood pressure and heart rate. If the massage is too painful blood pressure will increase. - Massage plus anti-hypertensive drugs may be more effective than the drugs on their own in lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure. * Cancer - effective in the management of symptoms of stress, depression and palliation. Promising for reducing fatigue and anxiety and reducing pain intensity.

Natural Management of Chronic Inflammatory Conditions

Chronic inflammatory conditions are very common. Whether it be auto immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis or Polymyalgia rheumatica and degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis; or injury from sport or accidents, the pain can significantly impact the quality of your life, interfering with sleep, socialising and occupation choices. All taken for granted by everyone else. * There are many herbs that can help reduce inflammation and pain such as Curcurmin, Boswellia and Devil's Claw. * In auto- immune diseases, herbs such as Astragalus and Hemidesmus, plus supplements such as magnesium, Vit D, zinc, selenium and probiotics all help to reduce inflammation too. * A specific diet is also important to reduce inflammation. There are many ways to tackle inflammation using herbs and supplements and this is one of the ways to do it. If you want more help please let me know.
